How to Read a 3D / 5D / 7D Floor Mat Specification
The number in 3D / 5D / 7D is not a quality grade and not a material. Here is what it actually describes, and the four numbers you should check instead.
If you buy mats for the Gulf market you have seen the terms 3D, 5D and 7D. They are used loosely, and two suppliers rarely mean the same thing. Here is a practical way to read them.
What the number actually refers to
The number describes how many faces of the mat are raised and formed, not quality and not material:

Practical consequence: a 7D mat is not automatically better than a 3D mat. More formed surfaces means more mould complexity, a higher unit cost, and a larger carton. If your buyers mostly want spill containment, 3D does the job at a lower price. If they are selling against a "full tray" competitor, you need the 7D.
The four numbers that decide whether the order works
Ignore the D-count until you have these four:
- MOQ per SKU — and whether it is per model or per order. A supplier quoting "MOQ 50" per model gets expensive fast when you want 20 models.
- Sets per carton, and carton CBM — mats are bulky and light. Your container plan is built from CBM, not weight. Ask for CBM per set, then multiply.
- Sample lead time — the gap between paying for a sample and holding it. This is what actually delays a first order.
- Mixed container terms — how many SKUs you may combine in one 20GP before the supplier starts charging extra. This is the single most useful number for a distributor building a first order.
Why "3D" is not a quality claim
Two mats with the same D-count can differ in ways that matter far more:
- Base material. XPE is light and cheap. EVA is denser and holds shape better. TPE is injection moulded, waterproof, and does not delaminate.
- Surface bonding. A laminated leather surface can lift at the edges over time, especially in 45 °C+ interiors. Ask how the surface is bonded, not just what it is.
- Anti-slip backing. Without granules or a high-friction base the mat walks forward under the pedals. This is a safety issue, not a comfort issue.
